Foot Case 7 Background
Cuboid Fracture
Background
Cuboid fractures are not common.
Fracture of the cuboid secondary to indirect compressive forces is called a nutcracker fracture. It occurs when the cuboid is compressed between the bases of the 4th and 5th metatarsals distally and the calcaneus proximally during abduction of the foot.
Cuboid fractures are associated with other fractures of the foot including fractures of the anterior process of the calcaneus, fractures of the 4th and 5th metatarsal bases and Lisfranc fractures. Concurrent fractures can compromise the integrity of the arch of the foot.
