Type I and II injuries should be placed in a sling until acute pain resolves, then early range of motion exercises can begin. Routine orthopedics referral should be given in case physical therapy is needed to regain range of motion. Treatment of Type III AC injuries is controversial, and Type IV-VI separations are usually treated operatively, so timely orthopedics follow up is indicated in these scenarios.
